At Carmen Arts Group, we understand the unique potential within every young artist. Our program design for youth aims to provide a comprehensive and high-quality arts education that cultivates a deep love for music, dance/movement, and acting.  Through sessions led by experienced instructors and clinicians, participants elevate their skills, ignite their passion, and sculpt their creativity.  This fall's classes are designed to support drama and performance skills.​​​

Learning outcomes:

​

  • Develop Confidence in Auditions: Learn how to approach auditions with self-assurance, understanding how to present yourself authentically while connecting with your audience and the casting team.

  • Choral Speaking and Movement: Gain skills in preparing and performing compelling dramatic works, drawing from a variety of cultural and artistic traditions.

  • Enhance Vocal Skills for Performance: Build vocal projection, clarity, and expression to ensure your voice is heard and connects with both your fellow performers and the audience, fostering an emotional connection.

  • Use Body & Physicality to Tell Stories: Understand how movement, gesture, and physical presence contribute to the portrayal of a character, learning how to use the body as a storytelling tool that resonates with diverse audiences.

  • Interpret Scripts & Characters with Depth: Strengthen the ability to analyze scripts and delve into character development, ensuring every choice you make reflects your character’s motivation, background, and emotional arc.

  • Strengthen Improv Skills for Auditions & Performance: Develop the ability to think on your feet through improvisation, improving creativity and adaptability in auditions and live performances, while gaining confidence in spontaneous performance situations.

  • Collaborate in an Inclusive Ensemble: Work alongside peers of all ages and backgrounds to create a supportive, collaborative environment. Learn how to respect and embrace the unique talents and perspectives of every performer, whether young or experienced.

  • Learn Professional Performance Etiquette: Gain insight into professional behavior in auditions and rehearsals, including preparation, punctuality, and engaging with both directors and fellow performers in a respectful, team-oriented manner.

  1. Build Resilience with Constructive Feedback: Receive and apply constructive feedback from instructors and peers to continuously refine your performance skills, fostering a growth mindset and emotional resilience in both auditions and performances.

  • Perform with Professionalism & Poise: Develop the skills necessary to perform confidently on stage, culminating in live performances where participants have the opportunity to showcase their growth and engage with audiences in a professional setting.

About the Instructor:

 

Christina Rogers-Hansen

​

Christina grew up with one foot always in the theatre, and began performing at age 5. Throughout her youth Christina competed in speech arts and singing, winning many awards, including at the provincial level. In her adulthood she earned an ARCT in speech arts, and gold medal from RCM for the highest mark in Canada. Christina went on to enjoy 20 years of teaching speech arts, singing, and group arts, adjudicating across BC.

Christina has fond memories of directing Carmen Arts Group productions, especially when during the opera Carmen, the lead soprano lost her voice, and Christina sang the role from behind the scenes. Christina holds a Master of Arts from TWU, and is completing a Master of Education, where her research focuses on youths' resilience and leadership growth through theatre experiences. Christina is a Métis citizen and her family is connected to the Kitselas nation. She is excited to cheer on the next ten years of productions!
